3 Records That Taylor Swift Named Under Her Belt At Video Music Awards 2023

1 years ago By Movies Desk

Taylor Swift had a night to remember at the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards, held at the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J. on September 12th. She walked away with an astonishing nine awards, an achievement that put her just one award shy of Peter Gabriel’s single-night record of ten, set in 1987.

Record 1: 23 Career VMAs, Second Only to Beyoncé

With these new additions to her trophy collection, Taylor Swift’s career VMAs tally soared to an impressive 23 awards, making her second only to Beyoncé on the all-time VMAs leaderboard. Beyoncé remains the queen of the VMAs with a remarkable 30 wins, including two with Destiny’s Child and two as part of The Carters.

In a historic twist, Taylor Swift became the first artist in VMA history to secure back-to-back awards in the Video of the Year category. No one else has managed more than two wins. She also extended her record as the artist with the most Video of the Year wins for videos that she directed or co-directed. Swift played a role in directing “You Need to Calm Down” with Drew Kirsch and took sole directorial credit for both “All Too Well: The Short Film” and “Anti-Hero.”

Record 2: Nine Awards in One Night

Swift’s second record-breaking feat was winning a staggering nine awards in a single night at the VMAs. This incredible achievement put her just one award shy of Peter Gabriel’s 1987 record of ten awards in a single evening. Swift’s dominance was nothing short of extraordinary, and she was the undisputed star of the night.

Swift’s domination at the VMAs extended to the Best Pop category, where “Anti-Hero” earned her a second win in this category eight years after her first triumph with “Blank Space.” Only Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake have won more times (three) in this category, with Timberlake’s tally including two awards with NSYNC. In a heartwarming moment, NSYNC presented the award to Swift.

Additionally, Taylor Swift clinched several other honors on the night, including Artist of the Year, Album of the Year for “Midnights,” Show of the Summer, Best Cinematography, and Best Visual Effects. While Swift didn’t personally work in the latter two capacities on her “Anti-Hero” video, the VMAs credit all artists for technical awards their videos win.

Record 3: Back-to-Back Wins in Video of the Year

One of the highlights of Swift’s night was winning the coveted Video of the Year award for “Anti-Hero,” a song that topped the Billboard Hot 100 for a record-breaking eight weeks. This marked her fourth win in this category, extending her record for the most Video of the Year wins. She had previously clinched this honor for “Bad Blood” (with Kendrick Lamar, 2015), “You Need to Calm Down” (2019), and “All Too Well: The Short Film” (2022).

Adding to her impressive haul, Swift also claimed the Best Direction award for “Anti-Hero.” This marked her third win in this category over the past four years, following previous victories for “The Man” (2019) and “All Too Well: The Short Film” (2022). Taylor Swift now joins an elite group of directors, including David Fincher and Spike Jonze, who have won three times in this category. She and Fincher are the only directors to achieve back-to-back wins in this esteemed category, with Fincher’s consecutive wins coming for directing Madonna’s “Express Yourself” (1989) and “Vogue” (1990).

So in the end we can simply say that ,Taylor Swift’s triumphant night at the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards showcased her undeniable talent and influence in the music industry, solidifying her status as one of the most decorated artists in VMAs history.
