3 Reasons Why HBO Max Cancels The Controversial ‘The Idol’ After A Single Season

1 years ago By Movies Desk

The Swan Song No One Saw Coming

Say it ain’t so! HBO Max decided that ‘The Idol,’ a series that merged pop culture titans like Sam Levinson of ‘Euphoria’ fame and The Weeknd (also known as Abel Tesfaye), doesn’t deserve a second season. If you’re reeling from this live streaming bombshell, join the club.

Why The High Note Wasn’t Enough

1. A Divisive Melody

From the moment of its release date, this drama raised more than a few eyebrows. Focusing on an up-and-coming music star, played by Lily-Rose Depp, who falls for a charismatic cult leader (The Weeknd), ‘The Idol’ was steamier than a sauna. Now, we all know that controversy can sometimes be a show’s best friend. In this case, though, it got a bit too hot to handle.

2. Not Exactly Music to Critics’ Ears

When it comes to reviews, ‘The Idol’ got a symphony of “nopes.” Many critics singled out Tesfaye’s performance and the show’s writing as their main pain points. Apparently, the series bit off more than it could chew, musically and narratively speaking. We all love a little drama, but if it’s not backed by a strong script, what’s the point?

3. Uncertain Futures & Broken Promises

What added insult to injury was the hope for new episodes, new seasons, and a new series altogether. Both The Weeknd and DaVine Joy Randolph, who plays Jocelyn’s manager, seemed to drop hints about a season two. HBO themselves earlier denied any cancellation rumors. Yet, all these teasers turned out to be false promises, leaving fans in a lurch.

A Sour Note To End On

Despite hitting daily-based article records in viewership (3.6 million in its first week), ‘The Idol’ couldn’t hold a candle to HBO giants like ‘Euphoria’ or ‘The White Lotus’ in the long run. While it broke out as one of HBO’s most provocative shows, it just didn’t hit the right notes.

It’s a heartbreaking crescendo for fans who found the series’ rewards and quests compelling. Will there ever be a series that can blend these elements into a harmonious symphony? We can only hope.

So as we bid adieu, let’s not forget the eternal wisdom of The Weeknd: “Continue to push the vision no matter how bumpy the journey.” In the brutal world of television, that’s a quest worth embarking upon.

And there you have it, folks! We’ll be back with more head-to-head comparisons and all you need to know about your favorite series. Keep your eyes peeled!
