3 Records That ‘The Expendables 4’ Will Be Eyeing On The Box Office

1 years ago By Neil Ross

Sylvester Stallone and Jason Statham are back to set the box office ablaze with The Expendables 4. As fans eagerly await the return of their favorite action heroes, there’s much speculation about how this installment will fare. In this article, we’ll explore three crucial records that The Expendables 4 is aiming to break at the box office, shedding light on its budget, expectations, and potential success.

  1. The Expendables Franchise: A Legacy of Modest Budgets and Big Returns

The Expendables franchise has a legacy of delivering big returns on modest budgets. It all began with the first movie, which brought together a cast of former action movie stars and raked in an impressive $268.2 million worldwide. The trend continued with The Expendables 2, surpassing its predecessor by finishing its theatrical run with $311.9 million. However, the franchise faced a slight dip with the PG-13-rated The Expendables 3, which still managed to pocket $209.4 million, thanks to its budget-conscious approach.

  1. The Expendables 4’s Budget: $100 Million or $200 Million?

Lionsgate has been tight-lipped about the official budget for The Expendables 4, but there have been hints and speculations. Cast member Dolph Lundgren mentioned two possibilities in separate interviews, suggesting that the budget could be either $100 million or $200 million.

During an interview with German publication FILMSTARTS.de, Lundgren noted that the budget was “very high, I think around $100 million.” This aligns with the budgets of the previous two sequels, The Expendables 2 and The Expendables 3, both of which had budgets of $100 million. Given the franchise’s history, this estimate seems plausible.

However, Lundgren also hinted at a significantly higher budget during an interview with PopCulture, suggesting that the new Expendables movie might have cost $200 million to make. He remarked, “Well, it’s definitely bigger. I mean, the budget is probably at least twice what the last one was, I think.” If Lundgren’s statement holds, then $200 million would indeed be the budget, which is double that of The Expendables 3.

  1. Box Office Expectations: $200 Million for Success

For The Expendables 4 to be deemed a box office success, it needs to earn at least $200 million worldwide. This benchmark is derived from the common notion that a movie should make at least twice its budget to break even. Considering the franchise’s historical performance, achieving this goal seems well within reach.

While the film’s domestic box office expectations may be modest, it is expected to perform strongly on the international stage. Already, it has made an impressive $11 million in China, underscoring the franchise’s global appeal. Historically, The Expendables movies have resonated more with international audiences than domestic ones, and The Expendables 4 is poised to continue that trend.

Final Thoughts

As The Expendables 4 gears up for its release, all eyes are on its potential box office performance. With a budget that may range from $100 million to $200 million and a target of $200 million in global earnings, this action-packed installment aims to continue the franchise’s legacy of delivering big returns on modest investments. Whether it breaks box office records or not, one thing is for sure: fans of high-octane action are in for a thrilling ride with The Expendables 4.
