‘The Nun 2’ Surpasses Denzel Washington’s ‘The Equalizer 3’ Even After Gaining Negative Notes

1 years ago By Neil Ross

American supernatural horror film “The Nun 2” is creating ripples at the North American box office, surpassing Denzel Washington’s “The Equalizer 3” in its opening weekend. In this article, we’ll delve into the box office success of “The Nun 2,” its performance compared to its predecessor, and the competition it faced at the theaters. Despite mixed reviews, “The Nun 2” managed to pull in an impressive crowd. Let’s explore how this thrilling horror flick achieved this feat.

“The Nun 2” Makes a Big Impact at the Box Office

“The Nun 2,” a sequel to the 2018 film, is part of the ongoing Conjuring Universe and has garnered significant attention. With familiar faces like Taissa Farmiga and Bonnie Aarons returning to reprise their roles and an intriguing storyline, the film had high expectations. Directed by Michael Chaves, known for his work on “The Curse of La Llorona” and “The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It,” it promised to be a captivating addition to the franchise.

Box Office Triumph Despite Mixed Reviews

Despite mixed reviews from critics, “The Nun 2” managed to pull off a remarkable opening weekend at the box office. It is estimated to have earned a substantial $31.3 million in its opening weekend, including $3.1 million from preview screenings. Although it falls short of the original film’s record-breaking opening, “The Nun 2” successfully outperformed “The Equalizer 3” in the North American market, as reported by Variety.

Comparing it to its predecessor, “The Nun,” which opened with an astounding $53.8 million and became the highest-grossing film in the Conjuring Universe, “The Nun 2” has received a warmer reception, with a 45% approval rating on RottenTomatoes, a significant improvement over the original’s 24%.

Competing with “The Equalizer 3”

On the other hand, “The Equalizer 3,” starring Denzel Washington in the thrilling assassin series, aimed to secure its position in the second weekend. It had a strong start with $3.4 million in earnings on its opening Friday and initially debuted with $42.3 million, marking the second-highest Labor Day opening in history. Currently, “The Equalizer 3” has accumulated approximately $59 million in revenue.

Despite facing stiff competition, “The Nun 2” is set to firmly carve its place within the Conjuring Universe. It is expected to closely trail “Annabelle: Creation,” which opened with $35 million, and is anticipated to surpass the opening weekends of “Annabelle Comes Home” ($20.3 million), “The Conjuring:
“The Devil Made Me Do It” ($24 million) and “The Curse of La Llorona” ($26.5 million).

Final Thoughts

In conclusion, “The Nun 2” has made an impressive mark in the North American box office, surpassing “The Equalizer 3” in its opening weekend, despite receiving mixed reviews. Taissa Farmiga’s return as Sister Irene and the demonic spirit Valak, portrayed by Bonnie Aarons, added to the film’s allure. While it didn’t reach the heights of its predecessor, “The Nun 2” still managed to captivate audiences and secure its place in the Conjuring Universe. It’s clear that the appetite for supernatural horror remains strong among moviegoers.
